In June 1915, the name "Volvo" was first used on an SKF ball bearing for the automotive industry. The name "Volvo" comes from Latin and means "I am driving", referring to the function of the ball bearing.
The first Volvo, named ÖV4, left the factory in Gothenburg on the west coast of Sweden on the morning of 14 April 1927. This car was equipped with a four-cylinder engine and was officially designated as a convertible.
The Volvo 120 Series sedan, known as the Amazon, was introduced in 1956 as a modern car that replaced the PV444.
The Amazon was a car that gave Volvo a great international career by establishing its reputation for ruggedness and reliability in overseas markets, especially the United States. The quality materials used in its construction have exported the serious image of the brand worldwide. The car's mechanical components, such as the engine and transmission, gained a reputation for indestructibility, making the Amazon an ideal police car adopted by many countries in Europe and Latin America.
The Amazon was a discreet but stylish bourgeois sedan. Its name referred to all models of the P120 generation, officially limited to its country of origin. On the international market, the Amazon competed with the Mercedes 190 and the Opel Kapitän. The engine of the Amazon was increased from 60 hp to 100 hp DIN at the end of its career, with inflatable kits that made it possible to reach a power of 128 hp.
In 1970, production of the Amazon series was discontinued to make way for Volvo's new car, the 100 series, which had been launched in 1966. A total of 667,325 units of the Amazon series were sold, including the 220 station wagon model.
