History of the Model
From 7 July 1961, the assembly lines of the 4CV are replaced by those of the R4 and it is on 3 August that the first Renault 4L can officially leave the production line on Ile Seguin.
The Renault 4 (commonly known as the 4L) is a small, popular car with a simple and practical design. It is also the first application of front-wheel drive on a Renault passenger car after the technique was adopted on the Estafette in 1959. The R4 was also the first estate saloon in the world to have four doors, a large tailgate, a spacious luggage compartment and a modular interior.
The Renault 4 was so named because it was equipped with a 4 horsepower engine; the Renault 3 which shared the same bodywork had a 3 horsepower engine.
The R4s were manufactured in France from 1961 to 1992.
A "Luxury" version, known as the R4 L, was produced. It was characterised by its third side window ("L" meaning "Limousine") as well as various accessories and chrome rings, making it more luxurious.
In France, the R4 was the best-selling car from 1962 to 1965 (succeeding the Renault Dauphine), then in 1967 and 1968. The third best-selling model after the VW Beetle and the Ford T, it was marketed in over 100 countries and produced in 28 countries.
In January 2021, Renault is talking about a possible return of the 4L in electric form. The magazine Auto Express presented the new Renault 4 (but it will be an electric SUV) as a pre-production vehicle.
