Features:

  • Displacement: 1468cm3
  • Engine: 4 Cylinders in line - 8HP
  • Transmission: Manual 4 speed
  • Transmission mode: Propulsion
  • Maximum power: 58hp
  • Weight: 1030 kg
  • Length : 4 470 mm
  • Width : 1 670mm
  • Height : 1 510 mm Presented the same year as the Citroen DS, the Peugeot 403 was unveiled on April 20, 1955 at the Palais de Chaillot at the Trocadero in Paris. Successor of the 203, the bodywork of this one will be drawn by the famous Pininfarina (responsible for the creations of the lion at that time.), it takes all the same the architecture of the 203: propulsion, engine in longitudinal position, rigid axle at the back.

In 1956, Peugeot launched a convertible version of the 403, which appeared in August, but its rather high purchase price slowed down its commercial career.

The Peugeot 403 will be produced in sedan, family (8 seats), commercial, convertible, van, pick-up and even ambulance versions. Thus, the 403 is declined for all the uses, only the version coupé was not realized.

It is aimed at a middle-class clientele and only partially replaces the 203, which is maintained to target a more popular clientele.

In October 1959 a Diesel version with Indenor engine is marketed, which will make the 403 the first French Diesel car in series, Peugeot will become at this time the pioneer of Diesel in France, and even internationally.

Some small anecdotes:

The 403 offered "as an option" an anti-theft device. It was a Neiman operated by an ignition key, the starter being launched by a bakelite push-button installed at the bottom of the dashboard. And yes, in those days, there were no thieves yet!
