Inspired by the Daytona, the 456 project was launched in 1989 before going on sale in 1992. Designer Pininfarina favoured refinement and discretion over sporting excess, and it was also one of the first 2+2 (4-seater) cars to reach 300km/h.
Produced from 1998 and presented at the Geneva Motor Show, the 456M (M for Modificata) was the second phase of the 456. Both the M GT and M GTA versions were included in the catalogue, offering customers a choice of manual or automatic gearboxes. The main features of the GT version were retained (engine block, cabin design, on-board technology, etc.) and the changes were mainly cosmetic. It would become the last Ferrari with retractable headlights.
With its pure, flowing lines, the 456 GT is considered by some to be the most beautiful Ferrari of the modern era, and all agree that it remains an exceptional GT in more ways than one.
For the record, the name 456 is an abbreviation of the unit cubic capacity, meaning that the 5472 cm3 are obtained by multiplying 456 by the 12 cylinders of the engine.
Between 1998 and 2004, 688 models were sold with manual gearboxes and 650 with automatic gearboxes.
