The Porsche 944 was developed in 1977 as an intermediate model between the 924 and the 928, using transaxle technology. The engine was based on the 928, with a capacity of 2.5 liters and 163 horsepower, and later 150-160 horsepower with a catalytic converter. In 1988 it was updated with a 2.7-liter engine and 165 horsepower, and the final version, the 944 S2, had a 3.0-liter engine and 211 horsepower. There were also turbo versions available with up to 250 horsepower. The 944 was criticized for its resemblance to the 924, but was a success with over 30,000 orders in the first year of production despite its high price.
The Porsche 944 is that it was developed in a time of financial crisis for Porsche. In the mid-1970s, the company was in financial trouble, and the expensive development of the 928 didn't help. So Porsche executives decided to develop a new model that would be more affordable for consumers while using the technologies of the 928, it was targeted at customers who wanted more power and prestige than the 924 but without the expense of the 928. Thus was born the Porsche 944, which was a great commercial success, allowing Porsche to get out of the financial crisis.
